Thanks to the 70 players that took a chance on the weather and participated in yesterday’s tournament. Considering the potential for more cancellations, I was pleased that we only had 17 players absent! It seems the team format is popular, I hope everyone enjoyed the day despite some early showers.
The winning team was Steve Keith / Jerry Vinland / Joseph Chien / Scott Pickard with a -15 / 129 total (Scott was added to complete their foursome, as their original fourth player had to withdraw early. Scott was assigned from another tee group with only two players). Congrats guys, that’s a very good number!
Individual Low Net winners were:
Flight 1 - Per Jensen with a -3 / 69
Flight 2 - Bart Greenberg with a -1 / 71
Flight 3 - Joseph Chien with a -10 / 62 (that will be lowering your index Joseph!)
Flight 4 - Doug Kramer with a +2 / 74
There were many skins winners across all 4 flights, with Bart Greenberg being the only multiple winner with 2 in flight 2. There were 4 CTP winners, with Joseph Chien taking 2 on holes 4 & 17.
Thanks again to all participants, and congrats to all winners.

Our 2024 tournament schedule is now on the website (tab above this).
Our December 7th, First Thursday Tournament was played on Mesa Linda. Tied for first place in the team competition were David Basile/Tom Ebert/Bill McCrea/Mike Supple and Don Walls/John Westermeyer/Tony Baccaro/Doug Kramer (net 127 -- 13 below par).
Flight winners from the four respective flights were Mike Meissenburg and Pete de Boer (both net 69), Harlan Andersen (68), King Ling Wong (67) and Kevin Dreiling (69).
Conrad Wilson and Shirley Skirvin were the winners of multiple skins.
Thanks to David Basile for setting up and scoring this tournament (and pushing his team to a victory).
Bret Bauer, Tournament Director
Adding their name to our website's Hall of Champions are the winners of the two team flights, all with net 61's. Dave Basile and Bill McCrea handily won Flight 1. Flight 2 went to Wayne Rowell and Eric Gastineau over Bob Colclough and Jim Ortale in a scorecard tiebreaker (back 9 by 1).
Eric and Bill also claimed multiple skins.
Individual flight winners were Steve Keith (67), John Jurczak (66), Tom Ebert (65) and Jim Ortale (66). Great scores despite some pins that were in extremely difficult places.
Joseph Chien, playing in our earliest group, put the CTP placards so tight on #2 and #6 that they were never bested.
Yet the shot of the day was this one by Ned Whittemore off the tee on #10. Ned collects an extra $100 for his Hole in One during a CMSGA tournament. Playing a nicely struck 8 iron into a light breeze, the group's suspicions from the tee were confirmed when they arrived at the cup. Congratulations, Ned!Skee Gutmacher was a beloved member, who knew every worker at the course. He had been our CMSGA treasurer for about 20 years, until 2017, when he passed a few days shy of his 94th birthday.
Thanks to Bret Bauer for setting up and scoring this tournament. This was his first. One of the most difficult issues is trying to score and reshape teams when little or no notice is given regarding withdrawals. Please let us know with as much notice as possible if your plans to play must change.

I'm not sure that we came up with a fixed solution, but the USGA will implement a rules update in January that changes the requirements for posting incomplete rounds. There is a nice summary in the last issue of SCGA's Fore Magazine.
Rather than restate the current rules, the new rules state that if less than 9 holes are played, no score can be posted. If 9 holes are played, then a 9 hole score is posted if the 9 holes have a separate rating. That 9 hole score will be used to update the player's index the day after posting, without waiting for it to be combined with another 9 hole score.
If 10 to 17 holes are played, then the hole by hole score must be entered when posting. The GHIN posting program with then calculate an adjusted 18 hole score. Posting net pars on any unplayed holes will no longer be the practice.
If any member is interested in taking one of the SCGA rules courses, there are in person and online offerings. There is much to learn. Let us know if you would like to pursue that.
Summary Results *Here* for our away tournament at the Talega Golf Club
Thanks to the 39 members who supported our away tournament. Flight winners were Ryan Haeger (net 70) and Tom Kennedy (net 75). Ryan also scored the lowest gross of the day (76). Hoyt Etter was our only winner of multiple skins. Players were offered the option of playing the forward tees. 33 players stuck with the white tees. The weather cooperated and the predicted winds never materialized. The course offered a number of challenging holes, reflected by more double digit holes entries than usual. Thanks to Mike Drennen for making the arrangements. We can help if any members wants to take the lead in another away event.
We had 15 Member Guest teams. The winning team was John Carroll and his guest, Matt Chavez, combining for a 9 under par net 61.
We had 32 teams in our members without guests division. The lowest scoring team was Sharon Thiedemann and Eric Gastineau, also with a net 61. Payout was to the top 20% in each division.
The weather was great, crossing several climate zones if you started early enough. Thanks to Peter Cary for directing and scoring this complicated tournament. The communication from members on guest information and notice on the few cancellations was most helpful.

The day was a mixed bag of weather to be sure. The early groups had to make sure to hit the ball straight for the first hour or so due to the fog that must have hampered their ability to see the ball after it was hit! Eventually the sun broke through, as it usually does, and the rest of the day was typically sunny and nice.
I think everyone enjoyed the alternate scoring format, but especially the winners of the the 2 team flights! Flight 1 winners with a net 89 team score (beating the nearest competition by 7 strokes!) were Bret Bauer / Mark Thomas / Steve Hess / Russ Barrett. Flight 2 winners with a team score of 94 were Jim Rossman / Alonzo Monk / Bill Walker / (Bill McCrea was randomly chosen as the blind to round out the team scoring format.) Congrats to both teams!

As always check the results for obvious errors. I don’’t know where to start in my description of today’s play.
I think that the great weather brought out the best in our club. Before I get to the winners let me recap a few things. We had 19 members shoot gross scores in the 70s with the lowest being 72 shot by both Alex Cruz and Greg Prough, good job. There were 9 net scores in the 60’s with the low being 66 by yours truly. 9 of our members got a natural birdie on #8 and 4 got a natural birdie on #9.
The team indexes ranged from a low of 32 to a high of 130 so I split the team contest into 2 flights. The winners of Flight 1 were Plummer, Stranak, Willis, and Kim with 106 Stableford Points, and Flight 2 winners were Arnold, Dague, Kennedy, and Rostrum with 105 points. The difference in first and last in Flight 1 was only 20 points and Flight 2 it was 27 points. These were close contests.
The individual Flight winners were Plummer, Flight 1, Presho Flight 2, Rostrum Flight 3, and Schomberg Flight 4. As you can see the winners in the individual flights helped their teams.
Many Skins were won today, Flight 1 (4) Fitzgibbons, Haeger, Walker, Wittemore; Flight 2 (5) Greenberg(2), Stranak, Presho, Andersen; Flight 3 (12) Rostrum(3), Green(2), McCrea, Baccaro, Kramer, Miller, Aasland, Wittemore, Howard J; Flight 4 (4) Rossman, Nevins, Thiedemann, Howard S. CTPs were wn by Fitzgibbons, Ludlow, Arnold Green, Thiedemann, and Gastineau.
Everyone should be proud of the way the group played today. I know that some feel they should have won a skin on a certain hole but everyone played so well that you probably were tied by someone else. I personally had 4 birdies and won none.
Great playing!!
On a clean up note. I know that it said on the sign up sheet that we were using 100% of your index for the team event, that was a typo. We use 85% of your indexes as recommended by the USGA when we have this type of a team competition. So today we used 85% for team play and 100% for individual play.
Off to Hawaii, Ron Plummer, Tournament Director

Our membership voted to limit our membership at our annual membership meeting on September 21st.
The SCGA will continue to send renewal notices to existing members and process credit card renewals for us. Membership will not be available to new members through the SCGA unless we ask them to change that setting. Our club will no longer be visible through SCGA's Club Finder or "Find a Club" search.
It is a sad move to exclude ourselves from new members, as that is the source for our continued existence. Our bimonthly tournaments at the Costa Mesa courses are our main purpose. For the last year, we have filled every tournament that wasn't impacted by the wet season. Members have been frustrated by the difficulty in entering events.
The course has been generous in providing the access to the times that we do get for our tournaments. It is important that we use this resource wisely and play when we commit to play.
Officers for next year were also elected at this meeting. Serving through September 2024 are Bill Cloud, President; Rich Clause, Membership; Jim Meyer, Treasurer; Gerry Schomberg, Handicaps; Jeff MacCarter, Communications; Ron Plummer, Peter Cary, Dave Basile, Dan Hudgins and Bret Bauer, Tournaments. Bret is new to the Board this year. Retiring from the Board was Ken Otsubo.

Alex won a tiebreaker over Tim Bjelland, both had 146 totals from competition rounds on Los Lagos on September 20th and Mesa Linda on September 21st.
Burnie posted the lowest two day net total of the four flights with a 135 (5 under par) using his best tournament score on Mesa Linda since July plus his September 21st score.
Both are eligible to compete in the SCGA Tournament of Club Champions held on December 4th.
Two Day Scores and Round One Hole by Hole Data of the Gross Competition
Two Day Totals for the Net Competition
We announced our Club Championship winners at the annual membership meeting after the tournament at the Newport Rib Company.
These are the winners of the single day tournament. Our four flight winners are Ryan Haeger (net 67), Steven Johnson (net 65), Don Walls (net 65) and Butch May (net 67). The lowest gross of the day (71) honors were shared by Ryan Haeger, Tom McCafferty and Alex Cruz.
Ed Chavez, Gene Ramirez and Butch May each claimed two skins from the 24 skins won among the four flights. Gene also threw darts at #8 and #12, earning two CTPs.
Thanks to everyone playing in this event that somehow ended up on schedule, despite the chaos at the start. We only try something this complicated once a year.

Round 1 was just completed for our 2023 Club Champion (gross). The first round was on Wednesday, September 20th, from the Los Lagos white tees. The second round is on Thursday, September 21st, from the Mesa Linda white tees. The second round is played as part of our regular Thursday tournament. No handicaps are used for this competition. Handicaps will be used for the other competitions taking place on Thursday.
The gross score from this event will be combined with the gross score from Mesa Linda on September 21st to decide our Club Champion (Gross). Members must have played in 5 events since 10/1/2022. Priority for play is given to eligible players with the lowest handicap indexes who sign up by 9/13/2023. Otherwise, play is open to all members as space allows.
A separate $12 entry fee will be collected for a prize pool to be distributed to the top 20% of competitors in this two round event.

The course was in prime shape, as it was being prepared for the Costa Mesa City Championships this weekend.
We have a few members entered into that tournament and wish them well.
The flight winners of our August 3rd tournament were Tim Bjelland and Pete de Boer (both net 69's) in Flight 1, Bill Cloud and Burnie Presho (also net 69's in Flight 2, Chris Aasland (net 68) in Flight 3, and Keving Dreiling (net 67) in Flight 4. Tim also had the lowest gross of the day, shooting even par (70).
Multiple skins winners were Ryan Haegar and Shirley Skirvin.

July 6th was the first tournament which was eligible as a score to be included for our September Club Championship (net) competition. Our Club Championships final round will be Thursday, September 21st. Like last year, that day will begin with an early shotgun start and be followed by our annual membership meeting and banquet at Newport Rib. More to follow on that. To be eligible for Club Champion (net), a member must have played in 5 CMSGA events since October 2022. The Club Champion (net) is determined by the combined score from the lowest score on July 6th, August 3rd, August 17th or September 7th and your September 21st score.
Thanks to Ken Otsubo for setting up and scoring this tournament. We had 86 players compete in four flights. The lowest gross score of 70 (which was also his net) was posted by Tim Bjelland. The winners of the four net flights were Per Jensen (67), a tie by John Carroll and Dan Hudgins (66), King LIng Wong (66) and Karen Hudgins (65). Each are off to a good start for September.
Per Jensen and Hoyt Etter were both multiple skins winners.

Mesa Linda was in about as good a condition to play as ever, with 7 out of 82 players coming in below net par.
The lowest handicap flight played the blue tees, and was won by Ned Whittemore with a net 68. Ned's 76 was also the lowest gross of the day. Flight 2 produced a 4 way tie for first between John Carroll, Doug Peterson, Arnie Aparicaio and Dan Kim, all with net 70's. Robert Simpson led flight 3 with a net 67. Sherry Howard won overall low net honors in flight 4, with her net 64!
Kevin Dreiling was our only winner of multiple skins, outscoring the others in flight 4 on holes 12, 15 and 18.

Don Miyada 1925 to 2023
Don Miyada passed on Friday, April 21st at home. a month shy of his 98th birthday. He was a member of the CMSGA since 1986. He was still golfing with us less than a year ago. He has been recognized on the CMSGA Hall of Champions many times. Don's life and persona were remarkable. He will be missed.

2014 LA Times - Newport Harbor High honors
2019 LA Japanese News - WWII commendation
We had a total of 61 golfers. Not the typical number we see on tournament days, but I think those that attended enjoyed themselves, despite it staying cool all day and the sun not showing itself once!
Playing with four clubs changes the game, but it is a fun exercise on occasion. Bob Baker clearly has more clubs in his bag than he really needs, as he posted the lowest net of the day (65). There were only two other sub par nets. Jim Ortale had a 67, finishing second in flight to Bob. Larry Newman won his flight with a 69. Bill Walker won Flight 1 with a 70. Tim Bjeiland took low gross honors at 75.
Larry Newman, Dan Hudgins, Bob Baker, Robert May, Jim Ortale and Sharon Theidemann each won a pair of skins from the 23 awarded overall.
Thanks to those who played and to Dan Hudgins for directing and scoring this tournament.

Thanks to all who braved the unpredictable weather yesterday. It turned out to be a very nice day overall after some early rain and a brief shower mid-morning!
Of the 90 that were scheduled to play, we we ended up with 83 players. Despite the moisture we still had some low team scores and low net individual scores as well.
Congrats to the team of Rustrum/Kennedy/Haeger/Cruz for taking first place in flight 1 with a -16 team score, and Baccaro/Kramer/Walls,/Westermeyer for first place in flight 2 with a team score of -12.
In individual net play, flight 1 we had 4 players (Mike Supple, Pete deBoer, Joe Kelly and Alex Cruz) tie for first with net 67's (hats off to Alex Cruz for a gross 67!). The flight 2 winner, Steve Stranak, also shot 67. Flight 3 ended in a 3 way tie at the top between Robert Simpson, Damian Wilkerson and Tom Kennedy. In flight 4, Jim Ortale won with the lowest individual net of the day (64).
There were a total of 22 skins won across 4 flights. Jim Ortale and Hoyt Etter were our only winners of more than one skin.
All in all, a fun day for everyone I hope.

Maybe it's a good problem to have, but CMSGA is about to hit 200 members. It wouldn't necessarily be an issue, but a high percentage of our members want to play in our tournaments. We have been able to accommodate most up to now, but we are very close to no longer being able to make that claim. We have always welcomed new members. I think I know what the most likely response is going to be to this question. Do you think we should cap our membership at 200? Please comment (respectfully).
We played on Los Lagos. The team format was 2 player teams, counting one best ball net. Playing handicaps for the team competition were 85% of the course handicap. Two singles were combined across tee times to form one of the teams. We also had individual overall net and net skins by flight, using 100% of course handicap, although skin's handicaps are adjusted to play off the low in each flight. Ron Plummer was the tournament director.
The first place team in the A Flight was Pete deBoer and Gene Ramirez. Their best ball net score was a 12 under par 60, winning by a margin of 7 strokes. The B Flight had a tie for first between Ryan Haeger / Eric Brady and Sean McGroarty / Russ Barrett. Ryan and Eric didn't realize they would be a team, as they were playing as singles in their tee group. Both teams scored a net 66.
Individual low net winners by flight were Pete deBour, with a net 68; Burnie Presho and Eric Gastineau tied, with net 71's; Leon Tomasyan won, with a net 69; Bruce Green and Russ Barrett tied with net 72's.
We had 21 skins distributed among four flights. Winners of two skins were Pete deBour, Paul Hennessy and Eric Brady.
The last Presidents Cup match was played, with Tom Ebert winning the B Flight 6+4 over the other finalist, Joe Willis. The tournament was extended about 6 weeks more than expected, due to many rain related postponements. One wish of Jeff MacCarter, who organized the tournament, is that the two flight winners, Dave Wilson and Tom Ebert, will have an ultimate grand playoff match. If that does happen, we will keep you posted. Thanks to our many participants.
Also thanks to Ron Plummer for setting up and scoring this tournament. Only two or three years ago we might only get 40 members to play on Los Lagos. We had 82 players on the course yesterday.

An error in Flight assignments has resulted in a correction from what was posted initially.
Flights were assigned by Course Handicap, not Handicap Index. For this tournament, Flight 1 had course handicaps from +1 to 9, Flight 2 was 10 to 17, and Flight 3 was 18 to 38. Sorry for the confusion.
