July 7th First Thursday Tournament Results

At one point we had tee times for 92 players.  By tee time, we were down to 81.  Please give us as much notice as possible if you are likely to not be able to play.

Notable rounds were a pair of gross 74's.  Those low honors were shared by Mike Supple and Alex Cruz.  No one was close to our overall low net of the day.  Richard Swingle had a 64 and is now leading in the quest for Club Champion (net).  Our Club Championships will be decided on September 15th, combining the net score of that day with the lowest net of either July 7th, July 14th, August 4th or September 1st.

Besides Richard, our other flight winners were Dean Skinner and in the low handicap flight, a three way tie among Bill Walker, Peter Cary and Mike McClanahan.  All had net 68's.

One interesting result in the low handicap flight is the outcome of dividing the payout for 6th place among 7 players.  Spoiler - not much.

Thanks to Dave Basile and his support team for organizing and scoring this tournament.

The preliminary results are linked above.

It was a great day to play golf.  The first pairing finished in four hours and eight minutes.  Our last pairing took five hours and ten minutes.  We had one group two hole behind at the end.  We must be vigilant to our position and keep our pace up.

Our lowest gross of the day was Don Spreeman with a 77.  Joseph Chien has the lowest individual net at 69.  Only six players shot net par or better.

But this was a team event.  The team of Meyer and Basile won the A Flight with a net 64 (seven under par).  The team of Logermann and Barrett won the B Flight with a net 65.

Skins were evenly distributed, with five in the low handicap group, and six in the next two.  Alex Cruz hoarded two CTP's.  Congratulations to all the winners.

Thanks to Ron for stepping up to direct and score this tournament, as we were scrambling to get this one covered.

You, sir, are Out of Bounds! / A Golf Rule Story

A few events back I incorrectly applied a rule of golf to a competitor. I thought I would share in case others encounter a similar situation.

(Short Version: When a fence defines OB, it is the inside (course side) of the fence posts that determine OB, and not necessarily the fence itself).

Mesa Linda / Hole #5

My competitor (we will call him "Jim" for this story) hooked his tee shot, and we were not sure if the ball remained in bounds. Jim correctly hit a provisional from the tee (a perfect drive, long and down the middle of fairway), and we then walked along the fence line looking for his first ball.

We found his ball on the course side of the fence, and here is where I messed up.

Even though his ball was indeed on the course side of the fence, and just an inch from the fence, the fence at that specific area had been pushed a foot or more into the out of bounds area. And since it is the inside of the fence posts that determine OB, the ball was actually OB.

I incorrectly called the ball 'in play', and advised Jim that the provisional was to be picked up.

Jim decided to take an unplayable penalty from the fence, and the drop area was still problematic, taking a couple more strokes to get the ball back to the fairway.

It wasn't until after the round I realized my error. Jim should have been lying 3 in the fairway with his provisional, but instead, because of a misunderstanding of the rules, was lying 5 well back from where his provisional was.

I apologized to Jim, and we remain friends.

All golfers are probably going to make mistakes at some point, interpreting or applying the rules of golf. We just need to learn from them, as I have.

 First Thursday Tournament Results Here

It was another great SoCal day to play a round of golf. The first group finished in about 4:05 and the last group in 4:40. Not too bad.

Congratulations go out to our low gross winner, Alex Cruz, with a 72. Low net winners in the Blue Flight were Arnie Aparicio and Jeff MacCarter with net 68s. Low net winner in the White Flight goes to Jim Alhandy with a net of 64 and a personal best gross, by 5 strokes, of 77. I think he is keeping that new driver!!.
In the Blue Skins Flight there were four winners with each skin worth $51. In the White Skins Flight there were five skins worth $42, with Brian Cwik winning two. The CTP contest had one multiple winner. Two went to Todd Danly. Congratulations to all the winners.
The course will only allow us 20 tee times and we are filling them up in record time. If we show the course that we can play faster we “might” be able to acquire more.
Hope everyone has a wonderful summer,
Ron Plummer, Tournament Director
