April 21st Third Thursday Tournament

April 21st Results Here

Great weather to play golf.  All groups teed off on time and finished in under 5 hours.  That is not bad for Lagos, Thanks to all.

The teams were split into 2 flights by total index and we ended up with 17 teams in each Flight.  Skins were split into 3 flights, again by index, with 23 players in flights A and B, and 22 players in flight C.

Low Gross today was shared by two members, Dave Basile and Jerry Vinland with 75s. Congratulations to both.

Team low net for Flight A goes to Basile/McCrea with a net 60. Team low net in Flight B was shared by 3 teams:  Jensen/Etter,  Aparicio/Cowgur, and Skirvin/Kim with net 67.  As you can tell the team of Basile and McCrea ran away with this beating the next closest by 5 strokes.

The only multiple skin winner today was Eric Brady with 2 skins.

We had a couple of dropouts for medical reasons and a couple of addition errors but otherwise a smooth tournament.

Thanks again to all for making it a pleasant outing.

Ron Plummer, Tournament Director

2022 Presidents Cup

Flight B won by Bob Colclough 3 & 1.

"Good Match, Good Time" Bob Colclough

"It was a good day.  Bob played great.  He birdied 17 to close me out in style.  He would have won closest to the pin."  John Miller

Flight A was in the books earlier this month.

Hole in One Alert!!

Julie Chien got a Hole in One during our April 7th event. This was Julie's first Ace, and it happened on the 8th hole at Mesa Linda.

Julie was playing from the forward tees, measuring 62 yards that day. She pulled her trusty Honma #10 iron, hit it pure, but it was her playing partners who first saw the ball disappear into the cup.

Please join me in congratulating Julie. 👍

And if you are still waiting for your first hole in one (as I am), maybe our day will come soon.

SLOW PLAY DISASTER- READ THIS NOW!!!!

A group that was allegedly one and a half holes behind was instructed by a COURSE MARSHALL to pick up and move to the next hole thus incurring a net bogie penalty for each member in foursome in violation.  THERE WAS NO WARNING!!!
In order to prevent this type of situation, always keep an eye on the group in front so if there is any question, you can just point to the group in front and tell the Marshall "They're right there dude".  Keep repeating this until he leaves. DO NOT ENGAGE PHYSICALLY OR YELL OR SCREAM EPITHETS OR TALK ABOUT HIS MOTHER.

Slow play does affect the golf course revenue also and I am sure if we were able to finish in 4 and a half hours consistently the course would take that into consideration to give us more tee times-whatta ya think?  More players is bigger prize money.

All in all it was a great day for golf-sunny warm and mild winds, beautiful smooth greens and great company.  Julie Chien holed out on number 8 for the first Hole in One this year.  Find her for your drink.

Please check the weather report since yesterday a few people weren't quite ready for the heat assault and either didn't hydrate or otherwise just wasn't prepared and struggled to finish, we don't want any members croaking out there.  Come to think about it, we do have 171 members now so I guess losing a few wouldn't be such a big deal.

Ken Otsubo, Tournament Director

Thanks to Ken for organizing and scoring this tournament.  We had large turnout for play.  Originally it was to be 84 players, but we had 82 start, and a handful not finish, primarily due to the heat.  This heat was unusual, but likely to be something we will face again.

Although we only have a prizes for net scores, the low gross deserves recognition.  Alex Cruz shot a gross even par 70, overcoming the recently aerated greens with ease!  Our low net flight winners were Chris Aasland, Lon Monk and Joe Willis with nets of 68, 68 and 64.  Dick Thiel and Julie Chien won multiple skins.  Julie's Hole in One on #8 wins $100 from the club.

A link to our pace of play policy is on this page of our website.  It is important to recognize when your group is out of position and take steps to avoid that.  We need help from the marshal to enforce this policy.  We believe a group should get a warning and a chance to regain position, before being asked to pick up and move to the next hole.  If you have not received a warning, you should ask the marshal for a chance to catch up, and then do it.

Let's Talk Skylinks

If you participated in our recent event at Skylinks in Long Beach, I would like to hear your thoughts about the day. I'll start by sharing some of my own.

Right out of the gate, I want to thank the Tournament Director, Abe Pearlman, for suggesting this event some months back, and then making it happen. It's one thing to be the TD for an event at Costa Mesa (which still requires a bunch of effort and we appreciate), but another thing entirely to coordinate at an away course. Thank you Abe, and any others who helped out.

The weather for the day was great, but the rain the previous day closed the range (save for a couple nets to hit into), and forced the Cart Paths Only restriction.

This leads me to my first question: When did you break the cart path only rule? For me, it was the 14th hole. I started thinking about it on the 11th, but it took a few more holes to get the nerve up to actually do it. Felt so guilty afterwards that I kept it on the path for the duration of the round.

Next Topic: Course Condition

Greens were beautiful to me. Maybe a little furry, but visually very appealing. Fairways were also, for the most part, very nice. Granted, any groups behind me might have found some sand-filled-divots the size of bunkers - sorry 'bout those! But...the aprons around the greens (and beyond) were kind of shoddy. Maybe they are dealing with some type of fungus attacking the grass? I don't remember that condition the one other time I played the course, maybe 6 months ago. Your thoughts?

That's all I got, but hope to hear from others. You can use the comment feature to reply to the post, if you would like.

Cheers!

Jeff
