Yesterday, we played with a reduced field of only walkers.  We can verify that the course was much too wet for carts.  Wetness aside, the playing conditions were good (if you avoided bunkers) and there were a number of  low scores.

Congratulations to Mike Edles with a net 61 as the winner from the blue tees.  Jerry Vinlaand, Don Spreeman and Peter de Boer tied for second with net 61's.  Lon Monk and Russ Barrett tied for first, playing from the white tees, with net 68's.  Steve Stranak, Sean McGroarty and Joe Mohney took third, fourth and fifth.  Mike McClanahan was our only winner of multiple skins.  There were 6 skins in each flight.

The low handicap flight of the President's Cup was played.  Jim Meyer and Dave Wilson are the finalists.  The other flight semifinals have had to be rescheduled.

Thanks to Dave for directing this tournament.  It was more complicated than most.  He had to prepare two sets of scorecards (for with carts and without) and a set of CTP markings, which we did not use.  With two versions of tee times, the flights and tee assignments were tricky.  Dave achieved a new level of proficiency in using the Golf Genius tournament app.

New Rules

Mesa Linda has a new scorecard circulating and Los Lagos will have one soon.

The scorecard now states: no relief from flower beds, which is the rule for city sponsored tournaments.

We will update our local rules to comply.  A flower bed is no longer considered equivalent to ground under repair.  Relief with a one stroke penalty may allowed per USGA rules for an unplayable lie, if that applies, permitting a drop within two club lengths from the location of the ball, no closer to the hole.

Another rule update deals with hole # 8 on Mesa Linda.  As yellow stakes are no longer being placed, the water will be played as a red penalty area.  When a ball enters the red penalty area from the green side of the hole, this now allows the option of dropping a ball, with a one stroke penalty, within two club lengths of where the ball entered the penalty area, no closer to the hole.

Both Mesa Linda and Los Lagos were recently re-rated by the SCGA.  The new rating changes are small and will not have much effect on handicaps.  We will begin using the new ratings once they are implemented in the GHIN and Golf Genius apps.

February 16th Results

An error in Flight assignments has resulted in a correction from what was posted initially.

Flights were assigned by Course Handicap, not Handicap Index.  For this tournament, Flight 1 had course handicaps from +1 to 9, Flight 2 was 10 to 17, and Flight 3 was 18 to 38.  Sorry for the confusion.

Tournament Summary Results *Here*

We had a slight delay due to a frost alert.  The weather, although a little cool to start, really turned into a beautiful day to play golf.  Some very good scores were recorded, and the results in the three Stableford Flights are:

In Flight 1, Joe Kelly won with a total of 42 points, one point ahead of second place Mike McClanahan (41).  Third and fourth place went to Mike Edles and Jon Borchert.  Ed Chavez and Ned Whittemore tied for fifth.

Flight 2 had a first place tie between Bob Kirchgessner and Mark Spreeman with 43 points.  Rich Miller, King Wong and Steve Stranak  took third, fourth and fifth.

Our Flight 3 winner was Bob Baker with 47 points, best of the day!  Second was tied between Conrad Wilson and John Westermeyer with 46 points.  Joe Mohney and Shirley Skirvin placed fourth and fifth.

Skins were plentiful, with 6 skins in Flight 2 and 9 skins in Flight 3.  Jim Ortale and Conrad Wilson each pocketed multiple skins.

We had 87 players, out of 92 originally scheduled.  Eight President's Cup matches have now advanced to their flight semifinals.

Thank you to all for playing. Looking forward to seeing you at our next tournament on March 2nd.

John Sloat 1930-2023

 John Sloat obituary here

John had remained a long term CMSGA member and member emeritus until the past year, remaining active until the prior year.  John was an accomplished golfer.  He also belonged to the Costa Mesa Men's Club.

When John moved into assisted living, he continued to follow our club.  He requested a CMSGA golf shirt, which he was pleased to receive when I delivered to him last year.  In return, he gave me his coveted Green Book for the Costa Mesa greens, lamenting that he would no longer need it.

A celebration of his life will be held at the Costa Mesa Golf Course on Thursday, March 2nd, at 2 PM

The handicaps used today were based on players index as of 2/1/2023 at 2 pm.

We had two members shoot low gross of 76 today Don Spreeman and Burnie Presho.  As you can see in the results Bernie’s was worth more as he got 10 strokes for a net winning 66 in the A Flight.

One multiple skin winner in Mike McClanahan with two.

We still have members that don’t call when they can’t play.  Please let us know as soon as possible if you are not playing as we are up against our allotted maximum tee times from the course.  As we get into spring and the summer months I can see that we may not be able to give everyone a time.  So please let us know if you are not playing.
