At our last board meeting, we discussed how to manage scores for players who start a round, but are unable to complete them.  It gets complicated, because the player may have played enough holes to require posting and may have even earned a skin from the holes played, yet when it comes to a team score, something must be done to either use the holes played, or substitute a blind player.

I'm not sure that we came up with a fixed solution, but the USGA will implement a rules update in January that changes the requirements for posting incomplete rounds.  There is a nice summary in the last issue of SCGA's Fore Magazine.

Rather than restate the current rules, the new rules state that if less than 9 holes are played, no score can be posted.  If 9 holes are played, then a 9 hole score is posted if the 9 holes have a separate rating.  That 9 hole score will be used to update the player's index the day after posting, without waiting for it to be combined with another 9 hole score.

If 10 to 17 holes are played, then the hole by hole score must be entered when posting.  The GHIN posting program with then calculate an adjusted 18 hole score.  Posting net pars on any unplayed holes will no longer be the practice.

If any member is interested in taking one of the SCGA rules courses, there are in person and online offerings.  There is much to learn.  Let us know if you would like to pursue that.
