July 7th - Results

July 7th First Thursday Tournament Results

At one point we had tee times for 92 players.  By tee time, we were down to 81.  Please give us as much notice as possible if you are likely to not be able to play.

Notable rounds were a pair of gross 74's.  Those low honors were shared by Mike Supple and Alex Cruz.  No one was close to our overall low net of the day.  Richard Swingle had a 64 and is now leading in the quest for Club Champion (net).  Our Club Championships will be decided on September 15th, combining the net score of that day with the lowest net of either July 7th, July 14th, August 4th or September 1st.

Besides Richard, our other flight winners were Dean Skinner and in the low handicap flight, a three way tie among Bill Walker, Peter Cary and Mike McClanahan.  All had net 68's.

One interesting result in the low handicap flight is the outcome of dividing the payout for 6th place among 7 players.  Spoiler - not much.

Thanks to Dave Basile and his support team for organizing and scoring this tournament.

The preliminary results are linked above.

It was a great day to play golf.  The first pairing finished in four hours and eight minutes.  Our last pairing took five hours and ten minutes.  We had one group two hole behind at the end.  We must be vigilant to our position and keep our pace up.

Our lowest gross of the day was Don Spreeman with a 77.  Joseph Chien has the lowest individual net at 69.  Only six players shot net par or better.

But this was a team event.  The team of Meyer and Basile won the A Flight with a net 64 (seven under par).  The team of Logermann and Barrett won the B Flight with a net 65.

Skins were evenly distributed, with five in the low handicap group, and six in the next two.  Alex Cruz hoarded two CTP's.  Congratulations to all the winners.

Thanks to Ron for stepping up to direct and score this tournament, as we were scrambling to get this one covered.

You, sir, are Out of Bounds! / A Golf Rule Story

A few events back I incorrectly applied a rule of golf to a competitor. I thought I would share in case others encounter a similar situation.

(Short Version: When a fence defines OB, it is the inside (course side) of the fence posts that determine OB, and not necessarily the fence itself).

Mesa Linda / Hole #5

My competitor (we will call him "Jim" for this story) hooked his tee shot, and we were not sure if the ball remained in bounds. Jim correctly hit a provisional from the tee (a perfect drive, long and down the middle of fairway), and we then walked along the fence line looking for his first ball.

We found his ball on the course side of the fence, and here is where I messed up.

Even though his ball was indeed on the course side of the fence, and just an inch from the fence, the fence at that specific area had been pushed a foot or more into the out of bounds area. And since it is the inside of the fence posts that determine OB, the ball was actually OB.

I incorrectly called the ball 'in play', and advised Jim that the provisional was to be picked up.

Jim decided to take an unplayable penalty from the fence, and the drop area was still problematic, taking a couple more strokes to get the ball back to the fairway.

It wasn't until after the round I realized my error. Jim should have been lying 3 in the fairway with his provisional, but instead, because of a misunderstanding of the rules, was lying 5 well back from where his provisional was.

I apologized to Jim, and we remain friends.

All golfers are probably going to make mistakes at some point, interpreting or applying the rules of golf. We just need to learn from them, as I have.

It was another great SoCal day to play a round of golf. The first group finished in about 4:05 and the last group in 4:40. Not too bad.

Congratulations go out to our low gross winner, Alex Cruz, with a 72. Low net winners in the Blue Flight were Arnie Aparicio and Jeff MacCarter with net 68s. Low net winner in the White Flight goes to Jim Alhandy with a net of 64 and a personal best gross, by 5 strokes, of 77. I think he is keeping that new driver!!.
In the Blue Skins Flight there were four winners with each skin worth $51. In the White Skins Flight there were five skins worth $42, with Brian Cwik winning two. The CTP contest had one multiple winner. Two went to Todd Danly. Congratulations to all the winners.
The course will only allow us 20 tee times and we are filling them up in record time. If we show the course that we can play faster we “might” be able to acquire more.
Hope everyone has a wonderful summer,

Third Thursday Tournament Results Here

We had a great tournament today and the last group finished in 4:45.  Thanks for everyone keeping up.  I heard several comments from the group about their low scores and how much they enjoyed the format.  The winners on the leaderboard were a mix of low team handicap indexes and higher handicap indexes.  The results that you see will be a little off from what you were expecting due to using 85% of the team index instead of 100%.  I know that our team was 2 strokes off than the dots indicated on the scorecard.  I also tried a different skin format.  Instead of individual skins I used a team skin format, again at 85%, split into lower team index flight and higher team index flight.  Also two of our teams were short a player so a blind was used for them.  Congratulations goes out to the low 2 best ball net team of Skirvin, Kim, Howard, and Howard recording a 31 under par followed closely by the team of Logemann, Bauer, Barrett, and McGroarty with a 30 under par.  There were a total of 10 skins in the low index flight and 9 skins in the high index flight.  We did not have a multiple CTP winner in contest.
Thanks to all for coming out,

Ron Plummer, Tournament Director

Thanks to Ron for directing this tournament.

48 out of 82 players scored net par or better in the shamble.  Two weeks ago the number was 15 out 82.  This was using 85% of course handicaps in both cases.  Looking at the hole by hole scoring stats, the easiest hole Thursday was #8 (3.05 gross scoring average).

Don Miyada shot a 94 today.  He turns 97 on Saturday!

Robert Simpson, a new member, shot a net 57 (gross 74).

Ron didn't mention that he tied for low gross with Don Spreeman (71).  There were six gross 72's.

The team formats are fun.  They do produce some interesting results.

Member Handicaps / Now Updated

UPDATE: May 7th

Member Handicap Page has been updated.

---

So I obviously need to set myself a reminder to update our Member Handicap Page after the first of the month, because I am forgetful.

I promise to update it this weekend.

Especially because of this:

The above is the graph for views to the Member Handicap Page. And when I begged for 'views' in mid April, you all delivered.

Thank you! 😁
