Presidents Cup 2023

Match play is one of golf’s major forms of competition.  Our club offers you one opportunity each year to experience this variation, with rules and strategy that slightly differ from our customary stroke play tournaments.

Sign-Up Here by Noon January 19th

Sign up in the left-column if you know you want to play. Use the right column if you are just considering participating at the moment. You will need to decide by the sign-up deadline.

The deadline to sign up is noon, January 19th.  Last year we had two flights.  Ideal would be 32 players.  After the deadline, the field will be sorted by index, and the flights and match order will be based on that seeding.  Contact information for entrants will be shared so the matches can be arranged or rearranged as needed.  We will automatically reserve a time for you to play your first round opponent on Thursday, February 2nd, alongside our regular tournament on Mesa Linda.  We will likely continue that for the remaining rounds.  The entry fee is $12.  Prize money will be awarded to the two finalists in each flight.

The matches may be played on either Mesa Linda or Los Lagos from any tee.  The competitors must agree on the date, time, course and tee.  Current indexes should be used and converted to a course handicap for the match.  The lower handicap player plays to scratch, while the higher handicap player receives strokes based on the difference in course handicaps and the ranking of the hole.

For convenience, for the first round, we will reserve tee times for President’s Cup matches.  Please confirm if those times will be used.  Otherwise, they will be released to all members.  You will not be playing in the stroke play tournament for skins or net prizes.  Tee times have been in high demand.  Please plan ahead and communicate to minimize scheduling problems.

The first match should be completed by February 2nd, the second by February 16th, the third by March 2nd, and the final round by April 6th.  There is some flexibility in the schedule, but sticking to these dates as much as possible is the most fair for everyone.

After each match, the scorecard must be dropped into our locker room slot.  The gross score for each hole must be entered for both players.  Per USGA handicap rules, if a player does not finish a hole or is conceded a stroke, record the most likely score for handicap purposes. A most likely score is the number of strokes already taken, plus in the player's best judgment, the number of strokes needed to complete the hole from that point more than half the time.  The club will post all scores (adjusted for ESC).

We have added a number of new members since last year.  This competition is a good way for all members to meet other members that you may not already know.  This is a fun event.   Please consider taking part.

  1. Hey Bill, are the Presidents Cup matches going to be played in addition to the regular play (36 holes) ? or those that participate in the match play are matched up during the standard play times and 18 holes per day?

    1. We will reserve spots from our standard block of tee times for the Presidents Cup Matches. These matches will be played along side the standard event for the event, but separate from the standard event, i.e. no skins, no CTP, no individual net, etc.

  2. Entered name on sign up sheet, won't allow handicap entry or access to survey question?

    1. Hello. Thank you for signing up! I have the index column locked, as I will add your index. The survey link on the sheet is not real intuitive, as it seems a double-click doesn't jump to it like we would expect. If you go to our website homepage, the top post should be related to the Presidents Cup, and at the bottom of that post is a link that should take you right to the survey. I will also email you a direct link to try. Jeff
