2/18/23 - Round 2 Complete / Semi-Final Confirmation Emails Sent / Survey Stat
The bracket is up to date, and the Tee Times link above now goes to the March 2nd Sign-up Sheet.

There is now just a 13% chance that the event will go to a single overall Presidents Cup Champion. Of the 16 potential Flight Winner match combinations, 2 would continue to an additional match for an overall champion.

2/5/23 - Survey Stat Update
Before the matches started, there was a 15% chance the event would go to a single overall Presidents Cup Champion. With Round 1 complete, the chance has increased to 22%. Of the 64 potential Flight Winner match combinations, 14 would continue to an additional match for an overall champion.

2/5/23 - Round 1 Complete / Round 2 Confirmation Emails Sent
The bracket is up to date, and the Tee Times link above now goes to the Feb 16th Sign-up Sheet.

2/1/23 - Round 2 Match Tee Times
If you win your Round 1 match, you will have a pre-reserved tee time for Feb 16th. I may not have your names listed on the sign-up sheet when it opens, but the spots are reserved.

If you do not win your Round 1 match, you will want to do the normal 9:30AM Friday thing, if you want to reserve a time for the Feb 16th Stableford event.

2/1/23 - Confirming Handicaps using GHIN App
On the morning of your round, you should open your GHIN app on your smartphone. If you don't have the app, good chance your competitor does, but also anyone else around can help.

On the Home Screen, hit Handicap Calculator. You will select the course you playing, and add your competitor using "Add Golfer". You can add them by their GHIN# or last name and first name. Make sure you add the correct person.

Confirm the Handicap Allowance setting is 100%, and make sure the tee selection for both players is correct. The S.O. column will tell you which player gets strokes, and how many. (It is the same as the P.H. column difference between players).

If someone else not in your match is helping, you will want to look at the P.H. column difference between you and your competitor, as the S.O. column could be taking into account the persons handicap who is helping.

The hole ratings on the scorecard will tell you which holes you get the strokes on (you all know this, from skins).

Have fun!

1/29/23 - Resolving Tied Matches after 18 holes

  1. If a match is tied after 18 holes it is to be resolved by a continuation of the match in sudden death format, where the next hole won determines the match winner.
  2. It is the committee’s preference that the match be continued on the same day of the regular match until a winner is determined.
    1. That said, if the competitors agree to finish their sudden death golf play on a different day, that is acceptable. Reserving the date/time for the match is up to the competitors, but should be completed before the next scheduled Presidents Cup matches.
  3. In choosing which hole to continue the match in sudden death, the USGA states the match should be continued on the hole where the match started, so in our case, hole #1 at Mesa Linda.
    1. Logistically this could create a problem teeing off again on #1. If so, the committee recommends that the competitors back-track the course to find a suitable gap in play to continue their match. Often, this will be to play #18 again, but the tee for #16 is also a hole where a gap in play can often be found.
  4. Regarding strokes given/received during sudden death, strokes will be given/received on holes just as they were in the regular match. So if a competitor received a stroke on hole #18 during regular play, they will receive a stroke again on #18 during sudden death.

 1/29/23 - Scorecards and Scoring

We will be using the standard course scorecards. There will be a stack of them in the pro-shop pre-marked with the Match#'s for you to use.

For each hole write down your gross score. If a hole was not completed because of a concession, write down what your most likely score would have been. If a hole was not started because the match had ended, leave those hole scores blank, and the committee will apply the appropriate gross score. CMSGA will be posting these scores to GHIN.

At end of the match the scorecards are to be turned in as normal to our box in the men's locker room.

1/27/23 - Starting Tee Times are Confirmed
Our first match tees off at 7:40, and subsequent matches are 16 minutes apart. This is important because per the Rules of Golf, you need to be on time for your match, or a penalty can be assessed.

"But who's to say what the real time is?"

Well, I bought a clock. An Atomic Clock. Same one the SCGA uses (I asked them). And I am (probably) going to put it on the first tee. And if I do, it will be the Official Clock of the Tournament.

"Oh. So you are going to start assessing penalties if I am a minute late? Or if I tee off early"

I'm not sure what I am going to do. I'm only saying right now that there may be a clock on the first tee, and I am asking everyone to show up and be ready to play at their tee time, so I don't have to think about the ramifications of having an Atomic clock on the first tee. 😀

1/24/23 - Closest to Pin (CTP) Competition
Presidents Cup players will not be participating in the CTP competition. If you stick it close, make the putt, hopefully win the hole, but do not write your name on the CTP sign. Remember - you are laser focused on the match play at hand. 😀

1/24/23 - Withdrawals / Match Changes
Two "A" Flight players have withdrawn. (Mike Edles and Brad Collins).
Per G Jensen was placed from the waitlist into one of the spots.
David Dumain was moved from "B" Flight to "A" Flight to fill the other.
Ted Doria was placed from the waitlist into the "B" Flight opening.

Emails were sent to the above (3) players, along with their Round 1 match competitors.

1/20/23 - I got nothing new to add today
But I'm glad you checked! 😀

1/18/23 - Purse Distribution Change/Clarification
The announcement page stated "Prize money will be awarded to the two finalists in each flight".
In your Match Confirmation email I stated "The purse for this event will be distributed proportionally to those who advance past Round 2 in each flight."

The email is correct.

Instead of only paying the (2) finalists in each flight, I have included payouts to the (2) additional semi-finalists in each flight. This distribution better aligns with our policy to reward 20% of the field in an event. This results in a little less money for the finalists, but the flip side is a participant need only win (2) matches instead of (3) to finish in the money, and recoup their entry fee plus.

1/16/23 - Pairings Completed
The 'live' random draw for pairings and tee times for Round 1 was completed as scheduled. Bracket has been updated with pairings. Emails will be sent to each pairing confirming their match and tee time no later than 1/17/23.

1/14/23 - Survey Stat
Based on current voting, there is a 15% chance that the competition will go to a Single Overall Champion. Of the 256 potential Flight Winner match combinations, only 38 would continue to an additional match.

1/12/23 (PM) Flights Created
Flights created, email to participants sent. I have changed the date requirement for completing the survey (or changing your prior vote) to Feb 16th. The draw date for pairings and tee times is Monday Jan 16th at 7PM. My plan is to do this live via Google Meet. Participants have the link, but if you want to join please email jeff@cmsga.club for a link.

NOTE: If you are one of the 32 participants and did not receive the "Welcome" emai from me, please let me know.

1/12/23 - Field is Full
I will be updating the handicap indexes shortly to determine the flights. I will then send an email to all participants, advising of the date and time of the draw to decide pairings and tee times.

1/8/23 - Survey Responses
With 26 of 29 participants having responded, here are the current results.

If there had been an overwhelming majority vote to continue the matches until a single overall champion is determined, we would have considered making this change. Based on the results we will prepare for "A" and "B" Flight Champions, with both awarded Presidents Cup Champion titles, and added to the Hall of Champions

However...
if the resulting Flight Winners both voted to have a Single Overall Champion, or if one voted Single Overall and the other voted "No Opinion", there will be a Final Match between the Flight Winners, to determine a Single Overall Champion.

You are free to change your vote at anytime up until the Flight Winners are determined. I think you can do so by re-taking the survey, but if that doesn't work, simply notify the club of your vote change.

1/8/23 - Bracket Determination / 1st Round Match Pairing
Same as in previous years, the participants will be split into (2) flights based on handicap indexes. I will be using latest indexes as of the time the field is complete.

One change I am making is that the pairings will not be made by index seeding. The pairings within each flight will be based on a random draw conducted on either 1/19 or 1/20. My plan is to live stream the draw with a webcam. If this doesn't work out, members can still watch the pairings being made via the shared sheet (much like during event sign up). I will advise the date and time in advance, and provide links as needed.

1/8/23 - Resolving Ties after 18 holes
Bill and I are still working on guidelines for resolving any ties after 18 holes. More on this soon.

1/8/23 - Handicaps and Strokes Given/Received
Player handicaps can change before and during the competition. It is the responsibility of the participants to check handicaps prior to teeing off during each round, to insure correct strokes are being applied. The player indexes I use to determine flights are not necessarily the player indexes that will be used for competition.
