Commenting on Posts and Pages

It is with some degree of trepidation that I have enabled commenting at our website.

I have done so to provide an additional means of interaction between club members, and with the CMSGA board. But many things can go haywire with this feature, and as such it might be a short-lived experiment.

Who Can Comment?

Literally anyone and everyone. Since the website is available to the public, and there is not a 'sign-in' feature available to us, there is no way (that I have found yet) to limit access to commenting. There is also no way to 'block' users from commenting, other than turning off the feature for everyone. So if the comments get out of hand, from members or the public, it will be turned off.

Are The Comments Moderated?

Yes. When a comment is posted it will not appear until the comment has been reviewed and approved by myself or another board member. This might seem a bit heavy handed, but I believe this is best for starting out.

Can Someone Post Anonymously?

Yes, unfortunately. There is no way to verify the identity of any who posts a comment. But please read the Rules for Commenting further down this page.

How do I Add a Comment?

At the bottom of any post or page where commenting has been permitted, you will see a link that says either "No Comments" (if no comments have been made yet) or "1 Comment" (if there is an existing comment, with the number indicating how many ). If you click that link you will be able to add a comment or read existing comments.

The comment area may be a pop-up window, or a new page, or something else. I am still trying different options for this.

If you are logged into a Google Account while commenting, then your name will show as the commenter. You will need to verify that you are not a robot. Click "Publish". A moderator will be notified of the pending comment and will either approve or deny it from being published. This should take less than a day - probably done within an hour or so.

Why was my Post not Approved?

See Rules below, but realize that the moderator is going to error on the side of caution when approving comments.

Rules for Commenting

I do not want to create a detailed set of rules trying to address every potential situation that can arise from a comment. This is a golf related website, specifically CMSGA, so all comments need to be applicable. Obviously no political references, no foul language, and no hot-button issues will be permitted.

  1. Include your name in your comment. If there is no name, good chance the comment will not be approved. And it needs to be your name. 👍
  2. Your comment should be positive. If you want to be critical of something related to the club, this might not be the best place for that. You can always email cmseniorsgolf@gmail.com for things like that.
  3. Anything potentially derogatory to another member (or anyone) will not be approved. For example: If you 'needle' a friend and fellow member ("Sam needs to learn how to putt!") chances are the moderator is not aware of your friendship with Sam, and will therefore probably not approve the comment.
  4. Stay on topic to the post or page you are commenting on. If you are commenting on, say, the Presidents Cup, don't post "I had a 4, not a 5 on hole #7 during the previous event".
In closing, give commenting a shot. Post a comment to this page if you want.

And to reiterate, this is an experiment, and it might go away.

If you have questions, or want to email me directly, please feel free. My email address is my first name initial (j) followed by my last name (maccarter) at gmail.com

Regards,

Jeff MacCarter
