This sign up for our 2025 President's Cup, our only match play event of the year, will close at noon on Tuesday, January 21st.

We are playing on Mesa Linda.  We will have 4 players 2 best balls net as the team format.  We will also include individual total gross, total net and net skins by flight.  Ron Plummer is the tournament director.  This sign up becomes active on Friday, December 20th at 8:00 AM.

The playing conditions were fine, but only a few managed to score well.  The lowest team score was 15 under par using two best balls net, by Damian Wilkerson / Robert Simpson / Neil Slater / Julie Chien.

Our lowest gross scores by flight were Dick O'Neil (72), Todd Schmieder (81), Sean McGroarty (85) and Neil Slater (89).  The lowest nets were Marty Burns (69), Dave Wilson & Todd Schmeider (67), Sean McGroarty (69) and Neil Slater (68).

Steve Stranak and Neil Slater each won three skins.  Mike McClanahan, Don Spreeman, and King Ling Wong each had a pair.

Thanks to Dan Hudgins for setting up and scoring this tournament.  Thanks to our members for showing up in force.  86 players is a large number for Los Lagos.

The SCGA hosted a collection of tournaments on December 2nd for the club champions of it's member clubs.  Our club champions from this year both competed.

Todd Danly, our 2024 Club Champion (net),  placed in the middle of his flight at Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort in Palm Springs.

Dick O'Neil, our 2024 Club Champion, tied for 10th in a field of over 80 players.  Dick played at the Spanish Hills Club in Camarillo in the event for senior golfers with low single digit index.  Thanks to Todd and Dick for representing us well.

Our 2025 Schedule is available on our website.  The tab link is near the top of the website main page.

We ran into several conflicts when limiting ourselves to First and Third Thursday's.  We had to use a number of Second and Fourth Thursdays to avoid days with holiday rates and less rounds on Mesa Linda.  The months of February, March, June, August, November and December are still First and Third Thursday tournaments.  The months of January, April, May, July, September and October are now Second and Fourth Thursday tournaments.  The spacing between tournaments remains at either two or three weeks.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Lower temperatures don't usually lead to lower scores.  The team of King Wong, Ted Doria, Julie Chien and Joseph Chien proved an exception, placing first with a team score of 121 (19 under par).  The next team was four strokes back.

The lowest gross scores by flight were Marc Kearns & Steve Keith (both 72), Mike Meissenburg (77), Don Walls (82) and Hoyt Etter (88).  This group also had the lowest nets:  Steve Keith (68), Mike Meissenburg (66), Don Walls (65) and Hoyt Etter (67).

Jim Lencek, Todd Schmieder, David Fleek and Butch May each won a pair of skins.

No CTP was closer than Ron Zent, with a Hole in One on #8.  This is Ron's third.

Thanks to Dave Basile for setting up and scoring this tournament.

Our Third Thursday Skee Memorial Member Member team events were won by Jim Meyer & Greg Prough in Flight 1, with a net 62.  Flight 2 was won by Tom Kennedy & Doug Rustrum with a net 65.

The winner of the day, however, had to be Alex Cruz, hitting every category.  Most impressive was his first hole-in-one on #2, accompanied by another CTP on #17.  He and Ryan Haeger were second in team Flight 1.  He was both low gross (68) and low net (70) in Flight 1 individual totals.  He collected two skins for natural eagles on #2 and #7.  Maybe we can push him off onto the senior tour.

The other winners include Bill Cloud (80), Todd Schmieder (81) and Jim Thornton (93) for low gross in the remaining flights.  Low net winners were Jim Meyer (69), Todd Schmieder (69), and Ted Doria (73).  Besides Alex, Tom Kennedy and Sherry Howard also won a pair of skins apiece.

Thanks to Peter Cary for organizing and scoring this tournament, which went from 92 players and no threesomes two days out, down to 85 players and 7 threesomes at game time.  We were given notice by the withdrawals, which is very helpful.

With some wind, it was still a pleasant day for play.  With over 100 players, about half of the field was members playing with guests.  The member guest event was won by Sean McGroarty and his guest, Chris Calkin at 11 under par.  Team handicaps were 85% of the handicaps shown on the scorecards, so the actual team results will differ from the results using your scorecards, which showed full handicaps.  The best score in the members playing with members division was by Doug Rustrum and Tom Kennedy at 9 under par.

The low gross winners by flight were Danny Dalton (gross 71), guest of Jim Alhandy, Scott Drennen (76), guest of Mike Drennen, Sean McGroarty (81), and Robert Simpson (86).  The best net scores by flight were Dave Basile, Tom McCafferty and Pete deBoer (tied at net 71), Scott Drennen (67), Sean McGroarty (66) and Joe Mohney (68).

Net skins were awarded in 26 cases, with Kyle Willis, guest of Joe Willis, the only player with two skins.  Larry Newman was only an inch or two away from an ace on #12 for his CTP.

We are posting scores for all players, including guests, with GHIN's.  Nine guests without indexes had handicaps calculated after play using the Callaway system, modified by the course rating.  Play was exceeding five hours near the end, which is slower that we would like to see.  Please work hard to stay in position behind the group in front of you during events.

Thanks to Bret Bauer, with assistance from Ron Plummer, in organizing and scoring this tournament.

Pete deBoer and Dan Kim each won both low gross (Pete 75, Dan 81) and low net (Pete 68 and Dan 71) in their flights (white tees or red tees).  11 skins were awarded.  We had 28 players and a day with great weather.

Thanks to Mike Drennen for helping us get this away tournament on the Talega Golf Course on our schedule, as one of the better public courses available to us.  Thanks to the members that played.  Everyone that was expected showed up.

The team Stableford was won with a point total of 66 by the team of Ron Plummer, Sam Arrietta, Jim Lencek, and Joseph Chien.

The highest net Stableford score was earned by Brad Collins, in the A Flight with 49 points.  The respective winners of the remaining flights were Sam Arrietta (46), John Westermeyer (48) and Shirley Skirvin (47). Of the 22 skins awarded, Dan Kim, John Westermeyer and King Ling Wong captured a pair each.  No multiply CTPs today.

Low gross honors were shared today by Alex Cruz and Marc Kearns, both with 68's.  Congratulations to both on great rounds.  Low gross in the next flights were G Fitzgibbons (78), Arnie Aparicio (83) and Gerry Schomberg (90).

Almost exactly 50% of our players today won something.  Congratulations to all the winners.

Hope the fog clears for Pacific Air Show this weekend.
Off to Prague soon,  Ron Plummer, Tournament Director

Thanks to Ron for organizing and scoring this tournament.  We had 82 players with a handful of openings left.  Signups for our next tournament are above.

You may have noticed the new button on the latest web posts.  This tiny addition was no small feat.  It involved inserting over 200 characters of html code into the page while knowing next to nothing about html code.  It is remarkable to me that it worked.

Club Championship (Gross)  Results

Dick O'Neil will take a turn as reigning Club Champion (Gross) until next year's competition.

The championship is awarded to the player with the lowest total score after combined with the score from Thursday, September 19th.  The Club Champion will be eligible to compete in the SCGA Tournament of Club Champions, which is held at several venues in the desert area on December 2, 2024.  A list of previous Champions is viewable on this website.

Thanks to Dan Hudgins for organizing and scoring this tournament.

Summary Results

A warm day to play golf but 89 of us made it through.  Dick O'Neil lit up the course today with a gross 67.  Since we did not have a team event, the entry fee was $6 to the net tournament and $6 to the skins which made for a higher than normal payout.  No multiple skin or CTP winners.  Overall low net was Todd Danly with a 64.

Have fun at the year end tournament and banquet as I will be in Seattle.  Good luck to all.

Ron Plummer, Tournament Director

Thanks to Ron for organizing and scoring this tournament.

Summary Results

The lowest placed team, winning by a two stroke margin, was Bret Bauer, Mike McClanahan, Sean McGroarty and Russ Barrett with a two best ball net of 17 under par.  In our four flights of individual stroke play, the respective net winners were Mike McClanahan (67), Gene Ramirez (70), Russ Barrett (70) and Kevin Dreiling (69).  The lowest gross winners were Marty Burns (69), Gene Ramirez (80), Leon Tomasyan & Lon Monk (87) and
Sean McGroarty (90).

Thanks to Dave Basile for organizing and scoring this tournament.  This tournament at one time had 84 players, but due to a large number of last minute withdrawals that number reduced to 75.  Please provide as much notice as possible if you need to withdraw, as it impacts our pairings, team scoring and course utilization.

Exceptional rounds are noted in each of our four flights.  Net winners of each flight were Ron Plummer & Pete de Boer (tied at 68), Doug Peterson (66), John Westermeyer (66) and Fred Depaola (62).  Gross winners were Alex Cruz (68), Doug Peterson (74), Doug Rustrum (81) and Fred DePaola (84).  Out of twenty winners of skins, Rich Miller was the only player claiming two.

Thanks to Peter Cary for organizing and scoring this tournament.  At one point we had 92 players signed up, plus 10 players on the waiting list.  On the day of play, we had 84 players.  To be fair to all members wanting to play, please do not take up a tee time if you are uncertain about playing, and especially give us notice if you will not be playing.  We should be able to provide spots to everyone wanting to play, but it is difficult when spaces are occupied, then canceled with little or no notice.

Our first Thursday tournament in August is the second of three Mesa Linda tournaments to earn a score eligible to apply for our annual Club Championship (net).

Hi Costa Mesa Senior Group.

Another solid day at CM country club!  We had a few last minute withdrawals and additions that brought our total to an impressive 84 golfers.

I would like to add that this is our inaugural (yes that is spelled correctly) tournament with prizes for Low Gross.  Gross winners in each flight get prize money ($10) and bragging rights.  Ties are broken by USGA rules. This award is funded from general funds, similar to our CTP awards.  Entry fees are used to fund the team, individual net and skins awards.

First time low gross winners are.....
Flight 1 Tim Schilling with a 75. Tim beat Alex Cruz on a tiebreaker. Tim also had 5 birdies on the back 9 including 4 in a row....That has to be a senior club record if we were keeping those stats. Great job Tim.
Flight 2 John Carrol (79) over John Jurczak by tiebreaker.
Flight 3 Harlan Andersen (78)
Flight 4 Joe Willis (84)

Team Winners......
1st place Walker, Monk, Edles and Meyer (17 under par). Welcome back Mike Edles!

Low net winners by Flight......
Ronald Plummer and Jim Lencek (70); Mark Spreeman (65); Harlan Andersen (64); and Joe Willis (62)  Nice Job.

Thank You everyone for a great day, Dave Basile, Tournament Director

Thanks to Dave for organizing and scoring this tournament.

Today’s tournament had 69 golfers playing, with some impressively low scores for only using 4 clubs.  This obviously proves we don’t need half of the clubs we carry around!

Some of you may have heard that Steve Gibbs (Gibby) is leaving us for Arizona, we’ll miss your crazy tales as we wait to tee off!  Likewise for Eric Gastineau, he's moving to Nashville to become a country star, or sell cars, which ever he’s best at!  It’s been great knowing both of you, we wish you the best in your new locales, and come back and play with us again when you are in town.

Today’s highlights:

4 Club Team Event - 18 teams competing in one flight.

1st place team - Sherry Howard, Daniel Kim, Jim Howard, and Shirley Skirvin won with a net score of 128.
2nd place was 129, and 5 teams tied for 3rd at 131

Individual Low Net - 1st place in each flight

Flight 1 - Bill Walker, net 71
Flight 2 - Daniel Kim, net 68
Flight 3 - Sean McGroarty, net 64
Flight 4 - Conrad Wilson, net 66

Net Skins - winners of 2 or more skins

Flight 1 - Steve Gibbs
Flight 4 - Conrad Wilson, Shirley Skirvin, Robert May

CTP winners

Hole 2 - Conrad Wilson
Hole 6 - Kevin Curcio
Hole 8 - Chris Aasland
Hole 10 - Mark Cleveland
Hole 12 - Tom Kennedy
Hole 16 - Tim Schilling

Low Gross today goes to Tim Bjelland with a 74!  So much for being handicapped by 4 clubs Tim!  Nice round.

Congrats to all winners!  Thanks to everyone for participating today.

Dan Hudgins, Tournament Director

Thanks to Dan for directing this tournament.

Eight players shot net par or better with only 4 clubs.

We had a perfect day for Southern California golf. We had some new winners and some of the usual "suspects" on the Leaderboard. Thank you for calling or emailing if you cannot make your tee time.

Thanks also for playing at a quicker pace today. We had some finishing in under 4 hours and most around the 41/2 hour mark. That really helps the course and our members! Let's keep it up, Fast Play is Fun Play!

Bret Bauer, Tournament Director

Congratulations to those who played well.  Teams were divided into two flights by total handicaps.  Those winners were deBoer & Aasland (17 under par using two blinds) and  Kirchgessner, Drennan, Stranak & McCrea (20 under).  The winners of the four flights were O'Neil (net 69), Aasland (65), J Howard (63) and May (67).  McCrea claimed three skins.  Drennan, Lencek, Westermeyer, Andersen and Bowen each grabbed a pair.

The last final of the 2024 President's Cup match play tournament was concluded.  Gene Ramirez won the second flight over Robert Simpson.  Mike Supple had won the first flight over Ned Whittemore earlier.

We had 88 players scheduled and 87 play.  Thanks to Bret for organizing and scoring this one.

Our 2024 President's Cup match play championship has been completed.

Mike Supple is the Flight A Champion, defeating Ned Whittemore 2 & 1.

Gene Ramirez has won the Flight B Championship over Robert Simpson 4 & 3.

Another nice day in So Cal to play golf. Despite the greens being punched on Monday they were in pretty good shape.
Low Gross today goes to Alex Cruz with a 74 and overall low net went to Todd Schmieder with a 64.
Flight A Team was won by the team of Vinland and Tomasyan with a net 62 and Flight B Team was won by the team of Green and Schmieder with net 61.
Flight A Individual goes to Vinland with net 70, Flight B to Walker net 68, Flight C to Schmieder net 64, and Flight D to Ortale net 71. Skins today were many as there were 25 across all four flights. The multiple winners were Keith and May with 3 each in their respective flights. Congratulations to all the winners and hope everyone had a pleasant round.
Again we had a few groups that were on the slow side and backed up the remainder of the tournament. REMEMBER YOU NEED TO STAY BEHIND THE GROUP AHEAD OF YOU, NOT AHEAD OF THE GROUP BEHIND YOU. If you see that you are falling behind go tee off while the rest of your group finishes putting out. For those of you who had to cancel thanks for calling or emailing to let us know it really does help.
See you in May, Ron Plummer, Tournament Director

At this year's Masters Tournament, the Costa Mesa Seniors were well represented.  Here are Bret Bauer and his boys, and Steve Keith, Mike Meissenburg and Jerry Vinland with evidence of their presence at this storied venue.  They are all back to play in Thursday's tournament.  Perhaps their games have been touched by the experience.

We snuck in a tournament before the rain. It was a bit chilly but we are very weather spoiled in SoCal! The golf was a little slow today, about a 5 hour average. It would be great if we could do what we can to complete rounds in 41/2 hours.

We had a full tournament with over 80 golfers participating. The CTP winners were Alhandy(2), Whittemore, Edles, Johnson and Skinner. The winners of the team event at 14 under par were Cary, Peterson, Fisher, and Aparicio - 4 Team BB Net, very impressive. The winners in the Individual low net 4 flights are De Boer (net 67), Meyer (66), Wong (63), and Wilson (67). Skins winners by flight are Cary, Walls, Simpson and Rossman. Hats off to Jim Rossman for winning 3 skins.

Special recognition to Per Jensen for his hole in one on hole #12!!  Don't forget to record the Masters next week. One last comment, please be courteous to the CMSGA members by calling or emailing if you cannot play in your scheduled time.

Thanks, Bret Bauer, Tournament Director

The weather finally cooperated and gave us great conditions to play.  Despite an early start, every foursome was filled and every person on the waiting list had been offered a position to play.

The shamble team format produced some unusually low scores, as shown by the winning team of Peter Cary, George Fisher, Doug Peterson and Tim Bjelland at 27 under par using 2 best balls net.  Every team was well under par, which feels good (until you compare).  The scorecards showed course handicaps.  The team handicaps were 85% of the course handicaps, so your team score could vary from what was estimated.

The winners with their net scores on the four flights were Ned Whittemore & Alex Crux (tied at 64), George Fisher (57), Doug Rustrum (59) and Bob Kirchgessner (58).  Fortunately for their indexes, the shamble scores are not accepted for posting.  No net skins were awarded.  Closest to the pin awards are noted in the results.

Thanks to Dave Basile for organizing and scoring this tournament with 84 players (plus 4 in match play).

This coyote would not be deterred by harassment and was approaching our golfers.  It took a charge by a golf cart to move.  No injuries and it was reported.

Good morning, CMSGA.  Some of you made it to yesterday’s mudfest, thanks to those who did and my understanding for those who didn’t!  Below are some of the results:

I don’t think anyone was surprised by the conditions at yesterday’s tournament, and as the morning progressed the weather just got sunnier, but we all had to slog through some sloppy spots.  I know I personally had to fish my ball out of multiple puddles!  Considering the conditions,I was pleased that we had as many players as we did, 43 in all.  Bill and I decided on Wednesday afternoon that it made sense to add a team competition (4 player team, 2 best net balls) to the mix because we had exactly 72 players and 18 foursomes, at the time.  The rain on Wednesday night changed all that of course, but after collecting the hodgepodge of scorecards yesterday afternoon and discovering that there were 7 complete foursomes, I took the stragler cards with 1, 2, or 3 players and and made foursomes out of them.  It was difficult in a few cases to tell who actually played with who, so my apologies in advance if you aren’t happy with my random groupings for 4 of the groups.  With that said, here are some of the highlights from yesterday:

Lets start with a fun one - Burnie Presho had a hole-in-one on #8!  That’s his second one in the last couple of years, nice going Burnie!  (amazing fact: that’s the third hole-in-one on #8 from our club in 2024 alone!)

Team winners were:

First place - Mohney / Spreeman / Presho / Spreeman with -16 to par
Second place - Andersen / Collins / Ned Whittemore & Christi Whittemore with -13 to par
Third place - Meissenburg / Keith / Vinland / Tomasyan with -10 to par

Individual winners

Flight 1
Peter Cary - net 67
Bill Walker - net 69
Tied for third - Jerry Vinland and Dave Klemens - net 70

Flight 2
Bret Bauer - net 69
Tied for second - John Westermeyer and Mark Spreeman- net 71
Robert Kirchgessner - net 73

Skins Winners - 2 flights

Flight 1
Dave Klemens had 2 skins, and four others had 1 each, all paying $14 each

Flight 2
Joe Chien and Joe Mohney both had 2 skins each, and 6 others had 1 each, all paying $8 each

Thanks again to all who made the effort to participate in less than ideal conditions, and congrats to all winners.  And a special shout out to Burnie!

Dan Hudgins
Tournament Director

The golf course was closed to carts due to the overnight rain.  Originally we had 72 players signed up for the First Thursday Tournament, plus 16 players hoping to play their second round of President's Cup match play.  Although the weather was fine, the course was quite wet.  We ultimately had 43 players for the Tournament and 8 players completing their PC match.

The scoring assigned handicaps as shown on the scorecards, with lower handicap players assigned to the blue tees.  We have clarified the tees used by players originally in match play, not on a preprinted scorecard, but added to the tournament.  Please let us know if you happened to play the white tees, but were assigned to the blue tees.

Burnie Presho knocked in his second lifetime Hole in One during the tournament, on Hole #8 from the Blue Tees.  Congratulations Burnie!

Summary Results *Here*

We dodged the weather and had a great day to play golf, albeit around some very wet areas.  Winners in the Flights were A Flight DeBoer with 43 points, B Flight Kennedy with 44, and C Flight Westermeyer with 51 points.  We also had multiple skins in each flight with each paying about $14-$16.

The bright spot was that Anthony Baccaro scored a “hole in one” on #8.  Low Gross today was a 73 carded by Tim Schilling.  Congratulations to all of the winners and to all the players competing in the Match Play Event who won their match today. I was not one of those.

February has 5 Thursdays so it will be 3 weeks before our next tournament so relax and read a good book.  See you all in March,

Ron Plummer, Tournament Director

Thanks to Ron for organizing and scoring this tournament.  The results of the President's Cup match play can be viewed on this website in a separate post.  Anthony Baccaro will receive a $100 credit to his CMSGA balance for his Hole-in-One during one of our regular tournaments (a few members were hoping to see him at the 19th hole to congratulate him).

Tournament Canceled Due to Rain :(

It was raining hard enough that most of us didn't even try to play.  If anyone can identify this golfer, we were sent this picture.

He wins today's tournament by default.  We couldn't salvage his scorecard.  It was too soggy.
