Summary Results

A warm day to play golf but 89 of us made it through.  Dick O'Neil lit up the course today with a gross 67.  Since we did not have a team event, the entry fee was $6 to the net tournament and $6 to the skins which made for a higher than normal payout.  No multiple skin or CTP winners.  Overall low net was Todd Danly with a 64.

Summary Results

The lowest placed team, winning by a two stroke margin, was Bret Bauer, Mike McClanahan, Sean McGroarty and Russ Barrett with a two best ball net of 17 under par.  In our four flights of individual stroke play, the respective net winners were Mike McClanahan (67), Gene Ramirez (70), Russ Barrett (70) and Kevin Dreiling (69).  The lowest gross winners were Marty Burns (69), Gene Ramirez (80), Leon Tomasyan & Lon Monk (87) and 

Sean McGroarty (90).

Thanks to Dave Basile for organizing and scoring this tournament.  This tournament at one time had 84 players, but due to a large number of last minute withdrawals that number reduced to 75.  Please provide as much notice as possible if you need to withdraw, as it impacts our pairings, team scoring and course utilization.

Exceptional rounds are noted in each of our four flights.  Net winners of each flight were Ron Plummer & Pete de Boer (tied at 68), Doug Peterson (66), John Westermeyer (66) and Fred Depaola (62).  Gross winners were Alex Cruz (68), Doug Peterson (74), Doug Rustrum (81) and Fred DePaola (84).  Out of twenty winners of skins, Rich Miller was the only player claiming two.

Thanks to Peter Cary for organizing and scoring this tournament.  At one point we had 92 players signed up, plus 10 players on the waiting list.  On the day of play, we had 84 players.  To be fair to all members wanting to play, please do not take up a tee time if you are uncertain about playing, and especially give us notice if you will not be playing.  We should be able to provide spots to everyone wanting to play, but it is difficult when spaces are occupied, then canceled with little or no notice.

Our first Thursday tournament in August is the second of three Mesa Linda tournaments to earn a score eligible to apply for our annual Club Championship (net).

We had a large group today, 89 total, and great weather.  Following is a recap of winners of each of the tournaments.  There were 2 noteworthy events today that need mentioning:

1. Damien Wilkerson had a hole-in-one on #10!  Congrats to Damien, that is something special for sure.

2. There were 2 natural Eagles on on hole 16, 1 each by Alex Cruz and Tim Schilling.  Unfortunately for these 2, they were both in the same flight so no skins were awarded for their achievements!  Sorry about that, but congrats to both of them for a couple of rare scores.

2024 Scotch Cup

Despite our narrow lead on the first round, Laguna Woods overcame their deficit to retain the Scotch Cup.  Thanks to all of our members that participated.  This is a unique event that offers an entertaining competition and play with their senior golf club.

Robert May and Eric Brady were a last minute pairing that combined to win the team competition, shooting 10 under par.  A mix of both high and low team handicaps placed.  

The respective net flight winners were Pete de Boer (69), Peter Cary (69), Lon Monk and Doug Rustrum (tied at 71), and Shirley Skirvin with our lowest net (67).  

Taking low gross honors by flight are Marc Kearns (70), Peter Cary (79), Lon Monk and Doug Rustrum (88), and Joe Willis (93).

Mike Supple, Pete de Boer, Doug Peterson, Tom Schmeider, Neil Slater and Eric Brady were all winners of two skins.
